I have studied Surinam for about 4 years now. I believe that many people (including Surinamese) think that globilization is about "free markets". Globilization is a phenomenon. It's foundation is technology. I personally believe that CARICOM will continue to fall behind in terms of creating a united economic force that can compete in the international market. Having lived in Surinam and travelled to this country on four separate occasions, my thought is that most Surinamese do not understand the impact of globilization. The country imports most of its goods and does not export enough to be a major player in the international market. Moreover, by belonging to CARICOM, Surinam is limited to the amount of tariffs they can charge another country. This inhibits the ability to engage in import substituion. Many people are trying to keep their children educated, maintain employment and hope that one day they will have opportunities. However, unless emphasis is placed on education for everyone and not just the elites, my opinion is bleak with respect to Surinam becoming a major player in the international market.
